EPILOGUE

Dans les tout premiers jours suivant mon retour à Rouen, je prépare ma réinstallation en France. A l’Inspection Académique, je dépose des vœux départementaux concernant la prochaine année scolaire. Comme il y avait assez peu à dépenser pour moi en Ethiopie, j’ai pu économiser sur mon traitement versé en France: J’ouvre un plan d’épargne logement et je m’offre une voiture. Mais j’achète celle-ci en “transit temporaire” (plaques rouges) car j’espère toujours pouvoir repartir. Pendant cet été de 1978, je récupère, annote soigneusement et classe films et photos. De toutes les images que j’ai fait parvenir en France, aucune ne sera perdue. Je me rends également au Ministère des Affaires Etrangères lors d’un déplacement à Paris pour proposer mes services hors de France pour la rentrée, notamment à Djibouti. Je fais valoir que je connais ce dernier endroit et “comment cela s’y passe” (voir Episode 28). Mais aucune de mes demandes pour l’étranger n’a abouti et n’aboutira. Il est vrai que je n’ai obtenu de la part de mes supérieurs hiérarchiques en Ethiopie qu’une note finale moyenne, pas pour des motifs professionnels, mais pour mes façons pas toujours assez formelles.

Je retrouve donc un poste dans une école en Normandie. Un jour de janvier 1979, la directrice entre dans la classe: « On vous demande au téléphone, je garde la classe ». C’étaient les services du Ministère des Affaires Etrangères pour une proposition de départ sous bref délai à Djibouti et je devais me décider tout de suite. J’étais déjà bien réinstallé et je ne tenais pas à abandonner la classe ainsi. Cela aurait été aussi un coup pour ma famille. Pris de court, j’ai dit non. Avec le recul du temps, je me dis que j’aurais dû accepter. Ma vie aurait probablement été toute différente. J’aurais pu facilement retourner en Ethiopie et continuer les beaux voyages. Mais les conditions de vie et de travail étaient difficiles à Djibouti et je n’aurais peut-être pas “tenu le coup”.

Aux vacances de Noël 1978-79, Jean-Noël, qui a retrouvé sa région de Savoie, vient passer une semaine avec moi au Havre, où je me suis installé. Nous allons au port voir le paquebot France amarré à son quai, lors d’une exceptionnelle vague de froid. Durant cet hiver, je revois aussi Christian et Danielle, qui habitent dans l’Oise. Aux vacances de Pâques 1979, je fais un séjour chez Jean-Noël à Albertville, et je vais aussi voir Jean-Luc et Dominique, qui résident près de Lyon. Mon camarade savoyard et moi nous verrons ensuite des dizaines de fois jusqu’à maintenant.

Je n’ai donc pas rebondi, je ne suis pas reparti travailler à l’étranger et je ne suis à ce jour jamais retourné dans aucun des pays visités lors de mon grand voyage. Mais cette étonnante expérience m’a formé et profondément marqué, d’une manière positive. Je souhaite à tout jeune, garçon ou fille, d’avoir la possibilité, le goût et la volonté d’en faire autant.

Je voudrais essayer d’analyser un peu les raisons pour lesquelles j’aimais tant ma vie en Ethiopie. Ce n’était pourtant pas toujours avantageux: Je n’ai par exemple jamais eu de voiture ni de télévision dans ce pays. Les possibilités de déplacements étaient limitées, les libertés réduites, le couvre-feu strict, l’approvisionnement peu diversifié, les communications et les services postaux pas toujours pratiques. Les occasions de contacts avec la population locale, surtout au Harrar, demeuraient très limitées à cause des barrières linguistique, culturelle et sociale. Les distractions étaient assez rares, même à Addis. Dans les rues, nous étions souvent sollicités par des personnes espérant se procurer un peu d’argent. Cela pouvait devenir irritant mais nous avions appris à dialoguer avec ces gens ou à les repousser gentiment mais fermement s’il le fallait. Entre Français à Addis, l’indifférence ou la condescendance n’étaient pas rares. Mes débuts à Harrar en décembre 1976 et à Addis en août 1977 n’ont pas été si faciles mais j’ai appris à aimer ces deux cadres de vie. Mon travail était agréable, avec un rythme nettement moins soutenu que ce que j’ai connu par la suite en France. J’ai pu trouver quelques bons camarades pour partager d’agréables moments. Je trouvais passionnante, bien que parfois dramatique, la page d’histoire que le pays était en train d’écrire. J’aimais l’exotisme et le climat ensoleillé du pays, bien qu’à Addis sans voiture, il fallait souvent avoir un parapluie à portée de main. Etant un peu livré à moi-même, surtout la seconde année, je ressentais avec plaisir l’affranchissement de certaines contraintes vécues en France, et tous ces changements de façon de vivre étaient perçus de façon positive. Bien que notre niveau de vie fût très simple, notre statut social était relativement plus élevé que ce qu’il était en France, et nous nous sentions moins “anonymes” que dans la mère patrie. Nous pouvions par exemple être invités à un cocktail ou à un dîner à un consulat ou dans un grand hôtel. La phrase suivante, d’une de mes lettres à ma famille (16 mai 1978) résume bien ma façon de voir les choses à cette époque: « Ici, bien qu’il y ait beaucoup d’inconvénients, j’ai à peu près tout ce qu’il me faut, et je n’ai pas de soucis ». Sachant que j’étais là-bas pour un temps limité, je voulais en profiter au maximum.

EPILOGUE

During the first days of my return home in Rouen, I prepare my settling back in France. At the School Inspectorate, I apply for jobs in several places in my département for the next school year. As there was little money for me to spend in Ethiopia, I managed to save from the salary paid into my account in France: I open a new saving account intended to buy myself lodgings later, and I purchase a car. But I buy the latter with red number plates (with payment of the taxes delayed) for I still hope I’ll be able to set off again. During this summer of 1978, I recover, annotate carefully and file movie films and photos. None of the pictures I dispatched to France got lost on their way. I also go to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the time of a short trip to Paris, to apply for jobs abroad at the beginning of the next school year, especially in Djibouti. I point out that I know the latter place and “how it goes there” (see Part 28). But none of my applications for working abroad will succeed. But, that’s right, I have only obtained a medium final mark from my immediate superiors in Ethiopia, not on professional grounds but for my ways, not always formal enough.

I find myself teaching in a school in Normandy, then. Once, in January 1979, the headmistress comes into the classroom: ‘You’re wanted on the phone, I’ll look after the class’. It was a call from the services of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who offered me a post in Djibouti. But I had to give my answer at once, and to leave almost straight away. I had settled back and was used to my new life, then, and I didn’t want to abandon the class like that. It would have been a blow for my family as well. Caught unawares, I said no. But now I think I should have accepted it. My life would probably have been very different. I could have gone to Ethiopia again easily and carried on with the nice trips. But conditions of life and work were difficult in Djibouti and perhaps I wouldn’t have held out.

At the time of the Christmas holiday 1978-79, Jean-Noël, who has joined his region of Savoy again, comes to spend a week with me in Le Havre, where I have settled down. We go and see the liner France moored to its quay in the harbour, at the time of an exceptional spell of cold. During this winter, I also see Christian and Danielle again. They live in Oise département. During the Easter holiday 1979, I stay eight days with Jean-Noël, in Albertville, and I also visit Jean-Luc and Dominique, who live near Lyons. My Savoy companion and I will see each other a few dozen times again, up to now.

So I didn’t bounce, I didn’t start off to work abroad again, and I’ve never come back to any country visited at the time of my “great trip” yet. But this surprising experience formed and deeply marked me, in a positive way. I wish every young man or woman the opportunity, the taste and the will to do the same.

I’d like to try to analyse a little the reasons for which I liked my life in Ethiopia so much. It was not always very attractive, though. For example, I never had television or a car in that country. Liberty and the possibilities of moving around were limited, the curfew was strict, supplying little varied, communications and postal services not always convenient. The opportunities of contacts with the local population, especially in Hararghe, remained very limited because of the linguistic, cultural and social barriers. Distractions were rather rare, even in Addis. In the streets, we were often approached by people trying to get a little money. It could become irritating, but we had learnt to talk to them or to push them away kindly but firmly. Between French people in Addis, indifference and condescension were not uncommon. When I started in Harar in December 1976 and then in Addis in August 1977, it was not so easy but I learned to like my life in those two places. My work was pleasant, with a pace markedly slower than what I knew in France afterwards. I managed to find a few good companions to share pleasant moments. I found the page of history the country was writing entrhalling, albeit sometimes tragic. I liked the country’s exoticism and sunny climate, although in Addis without a car, you often needed an umbrella at hand. Being a little left to myself, especially in the second year, I felt with pleasure emancipation from some constraints experienced in France, and all those changes of way of living were felt positively. Although our standard of living was very simple, our social rank was relatively higher than it was in France, and we felt less impersonal there than in the homeland. For instance, we could be invited to a cocktail party or a dinner in a consulate or a first-class hotel. The following sentence, from a letter to my family (16 May 1978) sums up the way I saw the things at that time well: ‘Here, although there are a lot of drawbacks, I’ve got nearly everything I need and I’m living free of worries’. Since I was there for a limited time, I wanted to make the most of it.

PETIT GLOSSAIRE        (A) = Amharique, langue majoritaire en Ethiopie.

Abeba (A): Fleur.

Abiot (A): Révolution.

Abouna (A): Chef de l’Eglise chrétienne éthiopienne.

Addis (A): Nouveau, nouvelle.

Amba (A): Montagne aux parois abruptes (et au sommet aplati, pouvant servir de refuge aux époques troublées).

Anbessa (A): Lion.

Baka (A): Ca suffit, c’est tout, c’est fini.

Bet (A): Maison.

Bouna (A): Café. Cette plante serait originaire d’Ethiopie.

Le Derg (A): ‘Comité’. La junte militaire communiste au pouvoir en Ethiopie à l’époque (voir le début de l’Episode 8). A son passif: les milliers de morts de la terreur rouge. A son actif: la promotion d’un idéal de justice sociale, et la gestion habile, menant le pays à la victoire, lors de la guerre de l’Ogaden. Le régime s’intitulait ‘Gouvernement Militaire Provisoire de l’Ethiopie Socialiste’ et sa devise était Ethiopia Tikdem, ‘l’Ethiopie d’abord’.

Farendji (A): Etranger. C’est l’un des tout premiers mots que l’on apprend en arrivant en Ethiopie.

Foundouk: Petit caravansérail, auberge, au Yémen.

Ganna ou Genna (A): Le Noël éthiopien, qui tombe le 15 ou le 16 Tahesas (6 ou 7 janvier du calendrier grégorien).

Gari (A): Carriole légère à deux roues, tirée par un cheval et utilisée comme taxi, surtout par les gens du pays, dans toutes les villes d’Ethiopie à l’époque, sauf à Addis.

Injéra (A): A la base de l’alimentation, c’est une sorte de grande crêpe, assez fade et acide. On la sert sur un grand plateau, posé sur un support en vannerie servant de table, et on se sert tous ensemble avec les doigts. On l’accompagne d’une sauce très épicée, et suivant ses moyens, d’oeufs durs, de viande et d’une sorte de fromage, le tout étant servi dessus à la fois.

Kebelé (A): Comité de quartier. Créés par le Derg en 1975, les kebelés existent toujours en 2012 et disposent de pouvoirs étendus.

Kéremt (A): La saison des pluies (de fin juin à septembre).

Khan: Caravansérail, grande auberge pour caravanes (de chameaux).

Khat: Arbuste dont on mâche les feuilles aux vertus euphorisantes, prisé par certains principalement dans la Corne de l’Afrique et au Yémen.

Kokeb (A): Etoile.

Krar (A): Sorte de lyre éthiopienne. Voir ICI.

Mamité (A): Gouvernante éthiopienne. Elle fait le ménage et le lavage, mais aussi les courses et la cuisine. Tous les gens d’un certain statut social sont tenus d’en avoir une.

Maskal (A): Croix.

Mesfin (A): Duc. La porte du duc de Harrar (Episode 4, 7e photo), fut nommée en l’honneur du prince Makonnen, second fils de l’empereur Hailé Sélassié. Le gouvernement révolutionnaire au pouvoir n’a pas jugé utile, pendant toute la période de mon séjour à Harrar, d’effacer cette inscription, souvenir de l’Ancien Régime.

Talla (A): Boisson peu alcoolisée, de couleur brune, à base de grains, parfois comparée à la bière.

Tedj (A): Sorte d’hydromel, de couleur jaune d’or.

Teff (A): Céréale à très petits grains, base de l’injéra.

Timket (A): L’Epiphanie éthiopienne (12 jours après Ganna).

Toukoul (A): Habitation traditionnelle, ronde, au toit de chaume, bien intégrée à son environnement.

Wat ou Wot (A): Sauce rouge très forte accompagnant l’injéra.

Zabagna (A): Gardien. Chaque immeuble ou villa en a deux: un de jour et un de nuit.

SMALL GLOSSARY            (A) = Amharic, the majority language in Ethiopia.

Abeba (A): Flower.

Abiot (A): Revolution.

Abuna (A): The head of the Christian Church of Ethiopia.

Addis (A): New.

Amba (A): A steep-sloped flat-topped mountain (which could be used as a refuge in troubled times).

Anbessa (A): Lion.

Baka (A): That’s enough, that’s all, it’s over.

Bet (A): House.

Buna (A): Coffee. This plant is said to be native to Ethiopia.

Derg(ue) (A): ‘Committee’. The communist military junta in power in Ethiopia in those times (see the beginning of Part 8). They are responsible for thousands of people killed at the time of the red terror. To their credit: the advancement of an ideal of social justice, and the clever management in the Ogaden war, leading the country to victory. The system’s title was ‘The Provisional Military Government of Socialist Ethiopia’, and its motto, Ethiopia Tikdem: ‘Ethiopia First’.

Farenji (A): Foreigner. It’s one of the very first words you learn when you land in Ethiopia. 

Funduk: A small caravanserai, an inn, in Yemen.

Ganna or Genna (A): The Ethiopian Christmas, which falls on the 15th or the 16th of Tahesas (6th or 7th of January in the Gregorian calendar).

Gari, or gary (A): A horse-drawn two-wheeled light cart used as a taxi, mainly by the locals, in all Ethiopian towns in those times, except Addis.

Injera (A): The staple food in Ethiopia, a kind of big pancake, rather insipid and acid. It’s served on a large dish, put on a basketwork support used as a table, and everybody together helps themselves with their fingers. One eats it with a very hot sauce, and if one can afford, with hard-boiled eggs, meat and a kind of cheese, everything served on it at the same time.

Kebele (A): Neighborhood association. Created by the Derg in 1975, the kebeles still exist in 2012 and have important powers.

Keremt (A): The rainy season, from the end of June to September.

Khan: A caravanserai, a large inn for camel caravans.

Khat: A small tree whose euphoria-giving leaves some people like to chew, mainly in the Horn of Africa and in Yemen.

Kokeb (A): Star.

Krar (A): A kind of Ethiopian lyre. See HERE.

Mamite (A): An Ethiopian housekeeper. She cleans and washes, and also does the shopping and the cooking. Everyone with some social standing must have one.

Maskal (A): Cross.

Mesfin (A): Duke. The Harar Mesfin Ber (Gate of the Duke of Harar) was named in honour of Prince Makonnen, the second son of Emperor Haile Selassie (see Part 4, 7th photo). The revolutionary government in office didn’t deem it necessary, for my whole stay in Harar, to obliterate this inscription, an Old Regime memory.

Tella (A): A little-alcoholic brown drink, made from grains, sometimes compared with beer.

Tej (A): A sort of gold-coloured mead.

Teff (A): A cereal with very small seeds, used to make injera.

Timket (A): The Ethiopian Epiphany (12 days after Ganna).

Tukul (A): A traditional roof-thatched round dwelling, well integrated in its environment.

Wat or Wot (A): A very hot red sauce going with injera.

Zabagna (A): A guard. Every building or detached house has got two of those men: one for the day and another for the night.

03 Fév. 2012. Le but de mon travail est double: laisser mon témoignage, et trouver ou retrouver des personnes intéressées ou concernées par le sujet. Ces deux objectifs se rejoignent car ces gens pourraient, par leurs apports, me “rafraîchir la mémoire” et contribuer à l’amélioration de mon compte-rendu. La publication de mon récit sur Internet m’a permis de retrouver Michel S., grâce à qui je suis maintenant aussi en contact avec Rémi B., Yveline F. et Francis O. Je remercie vivement Michel et espère de nouveaux développements d’amitiés retrouvées pour bientôt. Il est possible que des gens ne m’aient pas trouvé intéressant sur le moment, mais je n’avais que vingt ans quand je suis arrivé en Ethiopie et il y a “prescription” après si longtemps. J’aimerais beaucoup retrouver Jean-Luc B., Marie-Josée S., Christian M., Roland R., Jean-Yves C., les militaires du Camp Français de Harrar, ainsi que toute autre personne dont j’ai croisé le chemin là-bas. J’ai eu très peu de réactions de la part des Ethiopiens jusqu’à maintenant. Pourtant c’est en premier lieu pour eux que j’ai fait la version anglaise! Leurs contributions, voire leurs critiques, me seraient précieuses. Je suis également volontaire pour collaborer à un éventuel autre travail sur le sujet (je peux fournir documents et témoignages, mais attention, pas de re-publication de mes éléments sans mon autorisation préalable au cas par cas) et je suis aussi équipé pour scanner bénévolement et traiter numériquement vos diapositives, négatifs et documents papier. Toutefois, après six mois de mise en ligne et 7000 visites de ces pages, je ne pense pas pouvoir enrichir mon travail d’autres contributions importantes, et j’ai décidé de PUBLIER SOUS FORME DE LIVRE PAPIER. Je recherche donc un éditeur. Vous qui avez aimé mon récit, aidez-moi à en faire la promotion et à frapper à la bonne porte. Je suis ouvert aux suggestions et prêt à apporter les modifications appropriées. Je saurai être reconnaissant si vous avez aidé efficacement.

03 Feb. 2012. The purpose of my work is double: I want to leave my account, and to find or meet again some people interested or involved in the matter. These two aims concur for those people could, through their information, refresh my memory and contribute to the improvement of my account. The publication of my story on the Internet has enabled me to meet Michel S. again, through whom I’m now also in touch with Rémi B., Yveline F. and Francis O. I thank Michel very much and hope I can take up with other friendly relations again soon. Perhaps some people didn’t find me interesting at that time, but I was only twenty when I first arrived in Ethiopia, and it’s time for ‘prescription’ after all those years. I’d love to meet Jean-Luc B., Marie-Josée S., Christian M., Roland R., Jean-Yves C., the Harar French Camp servicemen again, and also any person who crossed my way there. I’ve got very few reactions from Ethiopians so far. However, it’s firstly for them that I wrote the English version! Their contributions, even their criticisms, would be precious. I’m also willing to collaborate on any other work about the subject (I can provide documents and accounts, but I don’t want you to republish any of my stuff without my preliminary permission, at any rate) and I’ve got the equipment for digitizing your slides, negatives and paper documents for nothing. So don’t hesitate to turn up, for those reunion days are as many great moments! Why wait? We aren’t eternal. Après mon mémorable périple au Liban et en Syrie, j’atterris à Athènes le 7 juillet pour la dernière escale de ce voyage de retour. Pas besoin de visa pour moi pour entrer en Grèce. La file d’attente au guichet à l’aéroport avance très vite et mon passeport reçoit bientôt le coup de tampon. Le passage en douane est rapide. Comme d’habitude, je change un peu d’argent à l’aéroport. Arrivé au centre d’Athènes, je recherche d’abord un lieu d’hébergement, je suis accoutumé à cela. Je m’inscris pour deux nuits dans une sorte d’auberge de jeunesse du nom de “Johns Place”, puis je fais une petite promenade dans la capitale. Athènes n’est pas une très belle ville. Je pense que sans l’Acropole, cette escale ne se serait pas justifiée. Mais au moins je vais dormir tranquillement.

After my memorable trip to Lebanon and Syria, I land in Athens on the 7th of July for the last stage on my way home. I don’t need a visa to enter Greece. At the airport, the queue at the counter moves forward very fast and my passport soon gets its stamp. I go through the customs quickly. As usual, I change a little money at the airport. Once in Athens city centre, I first search for a place to sleep in to-night, I’m used to it. I register for two nights at “Johns Place”, a kind of youth hostel, then I go for a short stroll into the capital. Athens is not really a beautiful city. I think that without the Acropolis, it wouldn’t have been worth doing this stop. But at least I’ll be able to sleep quietly.

Je passe la journée du 8 juillet à visiter l’Acropole et ses environs. Bien que je sois habitué à voyager seul, je regrette un peu de ne pas avoir un ou une camarade pour partager toutes ces expériences, puis ces souvenirs. Voici l’arc d’Hadrien, du IIe siècle de notre ère.

I spend the day of 8 July visiting the Acropolis and its surroundings. Although I’m used to travelling by myself, I regret a little not to have a companion to share all those experiences and then those memories. Here is the arch of Hadrien, from the IInd century AD.

A quelques dizaines de mètres de l’arc, il est impossible de ne pas remarquer l’Olympiéion, grand temple dédié à Zeus. La majeure partie du monument, qui a vu sa construction s’étaler sur huit siècles, a disparu mais ce qu’il en reste demeure impressionnant. Voir ICI.

A few dozen metres from the arch, it’s impossible not to notice the Olympieion, a large temple dedicated to Zeus. The main part of the edifice, whose construction spread onto eight centuries, has disappeared but what remains is still impressive. See HERE.

L’Acropole est une colline aux pentes abruptes et au sommet aplati. Les Propylées, situées à l’ouest, en commandent l’accès et constituent une transition entre la ville et l’enceinte sacrée. Vous voyez ici la partie sud de cette entrée monumentale, sur votre droite en arrivant.

The Acropolis is a steep-sloped flat-topped hill. The Propylaea, situated to the west, commands access and constitutes a transition between the city and the sacred enclosure. You can see the south part of this monumental entrance here, on your right when you walk in.

Après cette visite du matin, je retourne en ville, puis je reviens à l’Acropole l’après-midi. La face Ouest du Parthénon est maintenant prête pour la photo. Il n’est probablement pas besoin de préciser que la chaleur est très forte, augmentée par la réverbération qu’occasionnent ces marbres blancs.

After this morning visit, I go back into town, then I come to the Acropolis in the afternoon again. The west side of the Parthenon is now ready for the photo. It’s probably no use pointing out that the heat is oppressive, increased by the reverberation that cause these white marbles.

Depuis l’acropole, la vue est très étendue sur toute la capitale. Le point de repère le plus remarquable est peut-être le mont Lycabette, au nord-est, point culminant de la cité.

From the Acropolis, the view stretches onto the whole capital. The most remarkable landmark is perhaps Mount Lycabettus, the city’s highest peak, to the north-east.

Au matin du 9 juillet, je m’envole pour la France. Sans être lassé de tous ces voyages, je ne suis pas fâché de rejoindre le pays: Je vais retrouver ma famille, je vais découvrir mes photos qui s’accumulent depuis un an et je vais pouvoir prendre un temps de repos. A Paris, je rallie la gare St.Lazare, je suis habitué à ce trajet. Finis le ciel bleu et la chaleur, il fait gris et assez frais. Dans l’après-midi, le train m’emmène vers la métropole normande. « Rouen, Rouen. Deux minutes d’arrêt ». Voilà, c’est fini. Il me reste un kilomètre à faire à pied pour retrouver les miens et le cinquième étage qui m’a vu naître. A cent mètres de chez ma famille, j’ai la surprise de voir une voiture en stationnement qui brûle au bord de la chaussée, rue d’Amiens, devant des badauds qui s’attroupent. Je demande si les pompiers sont prévenus. On me dit que oui et effectivement, je vois leur voiture rouge arriver bien vite. L’incendie est tout de suite éteint. Décidément, ces vingt mois auront fourni leur lot de situations insolites jusqu’au bout.                 EPILOGUE – QUIZ

On the 9th of July, in the morning, I take off to France. I’m not fed up with all that travelling but I’m not sad to come back to the homeland: I’m going to meet my family again, to see my photos which have been piling up for one year and I’ll be able to take a rest. In Paris, I go to St.Lazare station, I’m used to this route. Blue sky and heat are over, it’s grey and rather cool. In the afternoon, a train takes me to the Norman metropolis. ‘Rouen, Rouen. Two minutes’ stop’. Here we are, it’s over. I’ve a kilometre left to walk before I see my family and the fifth floor I was born in again. A hundred meters from my block of flats, I’m surprised to see that a parked car is burning at the roadside, in Amiens street, in front of gathering onlookers. I ask whether the firemen have been called. I’m told that they have and I can see their red car arrive presently. The fire is soon put out. Really, those twenty months will have provided their share of unusual situations up to the end.                              EPILOGUE – QUIZ

Le coucher du soleil sur les ruines de Palmyre a tenu ses promesses et je suis debout très tôt le lendemain pour assister au retour des premiers rayons, en ce 3 juillet. Le ciel est toujours très clair mais l’astre paraît derrière la palmeraie et le phénomène des ombres ne se reproduit pas. Avant de reprendre l’autocar pour Damas, j’ai tout le temps de parcourir à nouveau l’antique cité et de l’admirer sous la lumière du matin.

The sunset on Palmyra ruins kept its promise and I’m up very early the following day to attend the return of the first rays, on this 3rd of July. The sky is still very clear but the day star appears from behind the palm grove and the shadow phenomenon doesn’t take place again. Before taking a coach back to Damascus, I’ve plenty of time to go all over the antique city again and to admire it in the morning light.

Le temple funéraire se dresse à l’extrémité ouest de la grande colonnade, là où le soleil disparaît chaque soir. Mais la façade regarde vers l’est et reçoit les premiers rayons du matin. Sur sa colline, le château arabe surveille ces solitudes chargées d’histoire et de mystère.

The funerary temple stands at the great colonnade west end, where the sun disappears every evening. But the façade looks eastwards and gets the first morning beams. On its hill, the Arabian castle watches these solitudes laden with history and mystery.

Dans la journée, je rentre à Damas et j’apprends que les hostilités ont repris à Beyrouth. Je me rends au bureau délivrant les visas de sortie. Simple coup de tampon? Le fonctionnaire me pose beaucoup de questions et me dit que j’obtiendrai ce visa ultérieurement et que je devrai revenir le voir plus tard. Je lui explique que je suis attendu à Beyrouth et que j’ai ensuite un avion à prendre. Je m’efforce de ne pas montrer l’agacement qui me gagne, et après d’assez longues palabres, j’obtiens l’indispensable cachet sur mon passeport.

La vie n’est pas chère en Syrie, nettement moins qu’au Liban. Lors d’un de mes repas dans un petit restaurant de la capitale, je m’étonne du prix très bas affiché au menu et je demande au serveur si c’est bien cela, si tout est compris, etc. Il me répond que oui, mais que je peux payer plus si je le souhaite. Je passe une seconde nuit dans un hôtel de Damas. Le 4 juillet, je retourne voir la mosquée des Omeyyades sous le soleil du matin. On voit ci-dessus le Dôme du Trésor, du VIIIe siècle.

During the day, I go back to Damascus and I hear that hostilities have started again in Beyrouth. I go to the office that delivers the exit visas. The stamp won’t be easy to get. The official asks me a lot of questions and tells me that I’ll get that visa later and that I’ll have to come here in a few days again. I explain to him that some people are waiting for me in Beyrouth and that I have a plane to catch afterwards. I try to conceal my irritation, and after pretty long conversations, I obtain the essential stamp.

The cost of living is not high in Syria, markedly lower than in Lebanon. While I’m having a meal in a small restaurant in the capital, I read the surprisingly low prices written on the menu and I ask the waiter whether it’s really what I think, whether everything is included, etc. He answers me: ‘Yes, but you can pay more if you like it’. I spend a second night in a hotel in Damascus. On the 4th of July, I go and see the Umayyad mosque again, in the morning sun. You can see the Dome of the Treasury (above), from the VIIIth century.

En début d’après-midi, je prends un taxi collectif à destination de Beyrouth. A la frontière, les douaniers me font descendre, moi seul, et examinent mon passeport. Je visualise encore maintenant en 2011 le préposé, de l’autre côté du guichet d’un bureau ouvert en forme de grande guérite taper mon passeport contre la planche en disant: « La Beyrouth! » (Vous n’irez pas à Beyrouth!). A nouveau, je dois parlementer et m’expliquer assez longuement: Il faut que je rejoigne ma famille, je ne peux dormir ici ou retourner en arrière, etc. J’espère surtout que le chauffeur du taxi ne va pas m’abandonner là. Mais non, tout le monde dans le véhicule attend patiemment. Cette situation rappelle l’anecdote de Wolisso (v.Episode 11). Au bout d’un temps assez long, on me rend mon passeport et je suis autorisé à quitter la Syrie et à poursuivre ma route. Ouf! C’est peut-être la couleur de mon passeport qui m’a sauvé: Je disposais d’un passeport de service, de couleur rose, intermédiaire entre le document “ordinaire” bleu et le passeport diplomatique vert, ce qui pouvait parfois faciliter les choses. J’ai aussi réussi à gérer convenablement les discussions: Il faut en Orient montrer détermination, patience et politesse, en évitant surtout les manifestations de colère.

En descendant sur Beyrouth, je distingue plusieurs incendies en cours sur les collines et sur la ville. Les passages à l’est de la capitale étant fermés, le chauffeur de taxi, qui connaît son métier, nous fait faire un grand détour par le sud et nous parvenons à rallier les quartiers plus calmes de l’ouest. Je retrouve le couvent. Toute la soirée, on entend des tirs et je ne vais pas passer une bonne nuit. Les Soeurs, elles, ont eu la force et tout le temps d’acquérir le stoïcisme dont elles font preuve. D’ailleurs, ce n’est pas notre secteur qui est visé, mais surtout Achrafieh et les autres quartiers chrétiens à l’est de la ville. Comme je me doute que la télévision française va parler de cette situation, j’écris le soir même à ma famille pour la rassurer: « Pour rentrer à Beyrouth cet après-midi, le taxi collectif a fait un crochet vu la situation instable. Le quartier du couvent est très calme ». Je passe encore deux journées entières à Beyrouth. Le 6 juillet, j’achète le journal L’Orient-Le Jour dont vous voyez le haut de la première page ci-dessus, comme témoignage du moment. Dans cette nouvelle phase de ce conflit embrouillé, ce sont surtout les Syriens de la Force de Frappe Arabe qui font pression sur le Front Libanais, majoritairement chrétien.

At the beginning of the afternoon, I take a collective taxi for Beyrouth. At the border, the customs officers make me get out, only me, and examine my passport. I can still remember the official now in 2011, at the other side of a counter in a kind of site office, knocking my passport against the board, saying: ‘La Beirut!’ (You’re not going to Beirut!). I have to argue things over again, and to explain myself for a pretty long time: I have to rejoin my family, I can’t sleep here or go back, etc. Above all, I hope the taxi driver won’t abandon me here. But he does not, and everyone is waiting in the vehicle patiently. It reminds me of the Wolisso anecdote (see Part 11). After a rather long time, I’m given my passport back and I’m allowed to leave Syria and to keep going on my way. Phew! Perhaps the colour of my passport saved me: I had a pink official passport, halfway between the ordinary blue one and the green diplomatic passport, which could make matters easier sometimes. I also managed to handle the conversations appropriately: In the Orient, one has to show resolution, patience and politeness, and above all to avoid getting angry.

On our way down to Beirut, I can sight several fires going on in town and on the hills. The passages from the east into town being closed, the taxi driver, who knows his job, makes a large detour southwards and we manage to get to the quieter western quarters. I’m now in the convent again. All the evening, gun fire can be heard and I’m not going to spend a good night. The Sisters, as for them, have had the moral strength and a lot of time to acquire the stoicism they show. Besides, our area is not aimed at, but rather Achrafieh and the other Christian districts in the east of the town. As I suppose French television is going to speak about this situation, I write in the evening to my family to reassure them: ‘To come back to Beirut this afternoon, the collective taxi made a detour because of the unstable situation. The convent quarter is very quiet’. I spend two more whole days in Beirut. On the 6th of July, I buy the newspaper “L’Orient-Le Jour” of which you can see the first page top (above), as evidence about the moment. In this new phase of this muddled conflict, Syrians from the Arab Strike Force especially put pressure on the Libanese Front, which is mainly Christian. Let me translate the first paragraph: ‘OUTBURST OF FURY AT ITS HEIGHT Beyrouth inhabitants had never seen such a thing, even during the worst moments of the two-year war; since the beginning of yesterday’s evening [5 July], the outburst of violence has been at its height in east-Beirut and its outskirts, where guns have been thundering without any respite, unloading hundreds of shells and high-tech projectiles onto the various quarters of this part of the capital city and its suburbs (…). ALL THE [EAST] DISTRICTS ARE SUBJECTED TO A BOMBARDMENT OF UNPRECEDENTED VIOLENCE’.

La photo récente ci-dessus montre, présenté sur une carte postale envoyée à ma famille au début de mon séjour, le genre de témoignage que j’ai pu collecter en me baissant, lors de mes promenades dans les rues de Beyrouth durant ces jours de début juillet 1978. Je me souviens que me trouvant à un moment dans une cour intérieure du couvent, j’ai soudain entendu un échange de coups de feu provenant d’armes automatiques, dans la rue toute proche. Cette petite cour ayant vue sur des fenêtres d’où des tirs pouvaient partir, j’ai jugé plus prudent de me cacher tout de suite derrière un gros pilier et d’attendre que le calme revienne. Les Soeurs m’ont d’ailleurs dit qu’il était déjà arrivé que des balles perdues finissent leur course dans le couvent. Grâce à tout ce que les religieuses ont fait pour moi, j’ai pu passer un bon séjour au Liban malgré la situation dramatique du pays. Le 7 juillet, après bien des effusions et des remerciements, je prends congé des Soeurs et je m’envole pour Athènes.                         EPISODE 38 

This recent photo (above) shows, displayed on a postcard I sent to my family at the beginning of my stay, the kind of memento I was able to collect, bending down during my strolls in Beirut streets in those days, at the beginning of July 1978. I remember that finding myself once in an inner yard in the convent, I suddenly heard an exchange of submachine gun fire, in the nearby street. This small yard being overlooked by some windows firing could come from, I thought at once: ‘I had better hide behind a big pillar straight away and wait for quietness to come back’. The Sisters told me that it did happen that stray bullets finished their flight in the convent. Through all that the nuns did for me, I managed to spend a good stay in Lebanon despite the tragic situation of the country. On the 7th of July, after lots of effusions and thanks, I take my leave of the Sisters and I take off for Athens.                    PART 38

En cette matinée du 2 juillet, je fais à nouveau une petite promenade dans le centre ville de Damas, puis je prends un autocar pour Palmyre, cité antique ruinée – dont le nom provient probablement de sa palmeraie – située dans une oasis du désert de Syrie, à 210 km environ au nord-est de la capitale. Palmyre connut son apogée aux IIe et IIIe siècles de notre ère, sous la domination romaine, jusqu’à l’époque de Zénobie. Voir ICI. Je passe l’après-midi à visiter les lieux et vous invite à me suivre.

On this 2nd of July, in the morning, I go for another short stroll in Damascus city centre, then I take a coach for Palmyra, a ruined antique city – whose name probably comes from its palm grove – situated in an oasis in the Syrian desert, about 210 km north-east from the capital. Palmyra knew its peak in the IInd and IIIrd centuries AD, under Roman rule, up to Zenobia time. See HERE. I spend the afternoon visiting the place and I invite you to follow me.

L’ancienne cité occupe une très vaste superficie. Nous sommes ici au centre du site, le long de la grande colonnade, regardant vers l’est et l’arc monumental. La ville actuelle de Tadmor se trouve au nord-est, alors que la palmeraie s’étend à l’est et au sud.

The former city takes up a very large area. We are here in the centre of the site, along the great colonnade, looking eastwards to the monumental arch. The present city of Tadmor is located north-east, while the palm grove stretches to the east and the south.

Il y a très peu de visiteurs à Palmyre aujourd’hui, ce qui me permet de mieux apprécier la grandeur et l’austérité des lieux. Ces trois personnages sont toutefois utiles à la photo car ils donnent l’échelle. Les consoles sur les colonnes servaient à y exposer des statues.

There are very few visitors in Palmyra to-day, which enables me to appreciate the greatness and the austerity of the place better. However, these three figures are useful for the photo because they give the scale. Statues used to be displayed on the column consoles.

J’ai tout mon temps et je dialogue avec un couple de Français qui voyagent de façon autonome et qui ont choisi la Syrie pour passer des vacances hors des sentiers battus. Je leur explique que par ce voyage de retour constituant une transition, j’apaise mes regrets d’avoir quitté l’Ethiopie, et que j’espère encore pouvoir rebondir dans les mois qui viennent.

I’ve got plenty of time and I talk to a French couple who are travelling alone together and who have chosen Syria to spend a holiday off the beaten track. I explain to them that by this trip home constituting a transition, I’m soothing my regrets about having left Ethiopia, and that I still hope I can bounce during the following months.

Vue plus rapprochée, montrant la finesse du décor sculpté. Moi qui aime les ciels bleus, je suis comblé car la pureté de l’air est quasiment absolue. J’ai de la chance: Il paraît qu’un vent chargé d’une brume de sable souffle assez souvent sur Palmyre. C’est lui qui doit, par son léger pouvoir abrasif, maintenir ces vieilles pierres de couleur dorée dans un parfait état de propreté.

I’m pretty lucky: They say that a hazy sand-laden wind rather often blows in Palmyre. It must, through its slight abrasive power, keep these old golden stones perfectly clean.

Le temple de Bel, à l’est du site, est l’édifice le plus imposant de l’ancienne cité. L’entrée se fait sur le flanc ouest par une porte colossale non centrée. Remarquer la taille relative des personnages.

Derniers feux de l’astre sur le Tétrapyle, qui se trouve à peu près au milieu de cette antique voie. Alors que le soleil disparaît derrière une lointaine crête basse, je distingue les ombres grimper à vue d’oeil le long des colonnes, tant l’atmosphère est claire. Mon grand voyage se termine, mais quelle apothéose! Ce lieu est peut-être le plus beau parmi toutes les merveilles que j’ai eu la chance de découvrir pendant ces vingt mois. Je dirige maintenant mes pas vers l’hôtel Palmyra, qui m’accueille pour la nuit.             EPISODE 37 

Last fiery glow of sunset on the Tetrapylon, located near the middle of that ancient way. While the sun disappears behind a distant low ridge, I can sight the shadows climb up the columns before my very eyes, the atmosphere is so clear. My “great trip” is almost completed, but what a grand finale! This place is perhaps the most beautiful among all the wonders I have been lucky enough to see during these twenty months. I’m going now to the Palmyra hotel, which accomodates me for the night.                                                 PART 37

Après avoir découvert Saïda le 26 juin et Jbeil le 28, je passe agréablement les deux jours suivants à Beyrouth, qui demeure calme. Pour mon excursion à Palmyre, je me suis procuré le visa d’entrée pour la Syrie – il me faudra obtenir sur place un visa de sortie pour revenir au Liban – et je vais profiter, grâce aux relations des Soeurs, d’une place de passager dans une voiture qui va faire le trajet vers Damas. En ce 1er juillet, en début d’après-midi, je rencontre mon chauffeur: c’est une ravissante jeune femme, au volant d’une superbe Chevrolet décapotable, de couleur vert olive métallisé. Nous allons faire ce parcours en tête à tête. Décidemment les Soeurs ne vivent pas au milieu d’un cercle austère et fermé, mais au sein d’un monde ouvert aux autres. Je suis un peu stupéfait, mais évidemment agréablement surpris! Je ne suis toutefois pas longtemps déstabilisé et j’ouvre bien mes yeux sur l’intéressant itinéraire qui va se dérouler devant moi. La route quitte la capitale et l’étroite plaine côtière en direction de l’Est et gravit bientôt les pentes du Mont-Liban, la chaîne de montagnes parallèle au rivage, qui culmine à 3000 m environ et qui a donné son nom au pays. Le mot Liban vient d’une racine sémitique signifiant blanc, en référence aux neiges qui couronnent les sommets. Nous franchissons un col et je constate que la plupart des nuages d’origine maritime accumulés sur le flanc occidental ne dépassent pas la ligne de crête. Nous descendons dans la plaine de la Bekaa, plateau ou large vallée, fertile dans sa partie centrale et méridionale, d’à peu près 12 km de large et située à 900 m d’altitude environ. Nous escaladons maintenant l’Anti-Liban, chaîne de montagnes parallèle à la première mais un peu moins élevée. L’arrêt à la frontière syrienne, au niveau du col, est une formalité de très courte durée. Cette fois, nous laissons toutes les vapeurs méditerranéennes derrière nous: le ciel est bleu roi, sans aucun nuage et le paysage déroule ses étendues quasiment désertiques alors que nous descendons sur Damas. Nous n’avons mis que deux bonnes heures pour parcourir les quelque 150 km et nous voilà arrivés. J’aurais aimé que ce voyage dure plus longtemps!

After the visit of Saïda on the 26th of June and Jbeil on the 28th, I spend the next two days pleasantly in Beirut, which remains quiet. For my excursion to Palmyra, I have obtained the entrance visa for Syria – I’ll have to get an exit visa in that country to go back to Lebanon – and I’m going to take advantage of a seat in a car bound to Damascus, thanks to the connections of the Sisters. On this 1st of July, at the beginning of the afternoon, I meet my driver: a ravishing young woman takes the steering wheel of a magnificent convertible Chevrolet, which is olive-green with a metallic finish, just for the two of us. Really, the Sisters don’t live in the middle of an austere and closed circle, but in a world open to the others. I’m pretty amazed, but of course pleasantly surprised! However, I don’t remain disconcerted for a long time and I open my eyes wide onto the interesting route which is about to unfold before me. The road leaves the capital city and the narrow coastal plain to the east and soon climbs the slopes of Mount Lebanon, the mountain range parallel to the shore, which reaches 3,000 m at its highest point and has given the country its name. The word Lebanon comes from a Semitic root meaning white, because of the snows crowning the summits. We cross a pass and I notice that most of the clouds coming from the sea, which accumulate on the west side, don’t go past the watershed. We drive down to the Beqaa valley, a plateau about 900 m above sea level and 12 km wide, fertile in its central and south parts. Now we climb the Anti-Lebanon mountains, a range parallel to the first one but a little less high. The stop at the Syrian border, at the watershed pass, is a very short formality. This time, we leave any Mediterranean haze behind us: the sky is royal blue and cloudless, and the landscape unfolds its nearly barren stretches while we are driving down to Damascus. It has taken us only two good hours to cover the 150 km or so and here we are. I would have liked the journey to last a longer time!

Me voici à nouveau seul dans une ville inconnue. J’en ai l’habitude maintenant. Je m’occupe d’abord de trouver une chambre d’hôtel pour me rafraîchir et déposer mes affaires, puis je pars à la découverte de la capitale. Je me rends à une agence de voyages pour participer à un tour organisé vers Palmyre. Je partirai demain en autocar et je resterai une nuit sur place. Je visite maintenant la mosquée des Omeyyades, dont vous voyez l’entrée ci-dessus. Au fond à gauche, le Dôme de l’Horloge, du VIIIe siècle.

I’m by myself in a town I don’t know, again. I’m used to it now. I deal first with finding a room in a hotel to freshen up and leave my things, then I start visiting the capital city. I go to a travel agency to take part in an organized tour to Palmyra. I’ll leave to-morrow by bus and I’ll stay one night there. Now I go and see the Umayyad mosque, whose entrance you can see (above). In the background, on the left, the Dome of the Clock, from the VIIIth century.

L’accès au sanctuaire est gratuit et permis aussi aux non-musulmans. Tout le monde doit enlever ses chaussures. La cour, très grande, couverte d’un beau pavage brillant, est bordée de portiques sur trois côtés.

People who are not Muslims are given permission for access to the sanctuary as well, free of charge. Everybody has to take off their shoes. The courtyard, very large, covered with a beautiful shining paving, is lined with porticoes on three sides.

Hier, j’ai découvert Beyrouth et ensuite Beit Mery, perché au frais sur les hauteurs. Aujourd’hui 26 juin, Jean-Marie, un enseignant français, coopérant au Liban et neveu d’une des Soeurs du couvent dominicain, m’emmène en voiture pour une excursion de la journée à Saïda, l’antique Sidon. Il faut profiter de la situation calme qui prévaut ces jours-ci pour découvrir quelques-uns des hauts lieux du pays.

Yesterday, I visited Beirut and then Beit Mery, set high up on the heights in coolness. This morning, the 26th of June, Jean-Marie, a French teacher serving on Voluntary Service Overseas in Lebanon and one of the Dominican convent Sisters’ nephew, takes me for a drive to Saïda, the former Sidon. We must make the most of the quiet situation which prevails these days to see a few of the historic places in the country.

La ville de Saïda, située au bord de la Méditerranée à une quarantaine de kilomètres au sud de Beyrouth, possède une histoire très ancienne et très mouvementée. Voici deux photos du Château de la Mer, construit par les Croisés au XIIIe siècle sur un îlot relié à la terre ferme par un pont.

Saïda, a town located by the Mediterranean about forty kilometres south from Beirut, owns a very old and eventful history. Here are two photos of the Castle of the Sea, built by the Crusaders in the XIIIth century on an islet linked to the mainland by a bridge.

Nous visitons maintenant le Khan Françaoui ou “caravansérail des Français”, à l’architecture caractéristique de ces grandes auberges qui accueillaient – ou reçoivent toujours – les caravanes de chameaux à l’étape, dans les pays arabes. Le bâtiment a connu diverses utilisations et est occupé par des religieuses françaises au moment de ma visite. Nous rallions la capitale à la fin de cette agréable journée.

Now we visit the Khan Françaoui or “Frenchmen’s caravanserai”, whose architecture is characteristic of those large inns which used to take in – or still accomodate – camel caravans at the stage, in Arab countries. The building has known diverse uses and shelters French nuns at the time of my visit. We get back to the capital city at the end of this pleasant day.

Le lendemain, je retourne en ville pour des courses et des démarches. On m’a vivement recommandé de visiter Palmyre et je dois pour cela me procurer un visa d’entrée pour la Syrie. Beyrouth est tranquille pour le moment. Je donne à nouveau la parole à ma grand-tante: « (…) Au Liban, ce n’est toujours pas merveilleux. Vous avez dû suivre à la télévision. Ici, c’est le point d’honneur et il demande la vengeance (…). Dans le Sud, on attend la visite du secrétaire de l’ONU. Maintenant que les Israéliens ont quitté le Sud, le problème est celui des Palestiniens qui veulent y retourner; bien entendu c’est pour attaquer de nouveau Israël qui cette fois, reviendra sans doute pour longtemps. C’est cela qu’il faut éviter. Les forces de l’ONU laissent passer les Palestiniens la plupart du temps. C’est cela qui est grave. Il faut arriver à ce qu’ils soient désarmés et si possible qu’ils quittent le Liban. Vous voyez la complexité de la situation [lettre du 27 juin]».

The following day, I go into town again, for steps and a bit of shopping. I’ve been recommended to visit Palmyra and I have to obtain an entrance visa to Syria first. Beirut is calm at the moment. I let my great-aunt speak again: ‘(…) In Lebanon, it’s not wonderful yet. You must have seen on television. Here, the point of honour prevails and it demands vengeance (…). In the South, the visit of the United Nations secretary is expected. Since the Israelis left the South, the problem is now about Palestinians who want to go back there. Of course, their purpose is to attack Israel again, who, this time will come back for a long time. This is what we have to avoid. The UN forces let the Palestinians come in most of the time. Here is the serious problem. One must manage to have them disarmed and if possible to make them get out of Lebanon. You can see the intricacy of the situation [letter of 27 June]‘.

Le 28 juin, toujours en compagnie de Jean-Marie, je me rends à Jbeil, l’antique Byblos. Comme Saïda, la ville est extrêmement ancienne et se trouve au bord de la mer à 40 km environ de la capitale, mais cette fois vers le nord. Nous déjeunons chez des amis de mon camarade, dans une jolie villa près d’une crique de la Méditerranée. C’est le début des vacances d’été, je passe d’inoubliables instants dans une ambiance chaleureuse et j’essaie d’oublier qu’en ces ultimes moments forts de mon odyssée, c’est mon passé que je m’apprête déjà à écrire.

On the 28th of June, in the company of Jean-Marie again, I go to Jbeil, the former Byblos. Like Saïda, the town is extremely old and is situated by the sea about forty km from the capital city, but this time to the north. We have lunch with friends of my companion’s, in a nice detached house near a creek of the Mediterranean. It’s the beginning of the summer holidays and I try to forget that while I’m spending unforgettable instants in a warm atmosphere in these last strong moments of my odyssey, I’m now about to start writing my past.

De nombreuses religions cohabitent et parfois en ce moment s’opposent dans ce pays déchiré. On voit ici une petite mosquée. En fin d’après-midi, nous rentrons à Beyrouth. Je remercie chaleureusement Jean-Marie pour m’avoir fait découvrir agréablement ces beaux sites historiques. Quand la guerre sera finie, ce pays pourra devenir un vrai petit paradis. J’aimerais bien moi aussi travailler au Liban à cause de l’exotisme, du climat ensoleillé et des beaux voyages à faire, mais je sais qu’obtenir un poste ici me serait très difficile. Je passe les deux jours qui suivent dans la capitale, avant de prendre le chemin de la Syrie.                                       EPISODE 35

Numerous religions live together and sometimes at the moment confront each other in this torn country. One can see a small mosque here. At the end of the afternoon, we get back to Beirut. I thank Jean-Marie warmly for enabling me to see those beautiful historic sites. When the war is over, this country will be able to become a real little paradise. I’d like to work in Lebanon as well because of exoticism, of the sunny climate and of the nice trips to do, but I know that to obtain a post here would be very difficult for me. I spend the following two days in the capital, before proceeding to Syria.                 PART 35

Ce matin, j’ai visité le centre ville de Beyrouth, ou ce qu’il en reste, et cela m’a laissé une curieuse impression, car la cité, bien que fort endommagée par les bombardements, est très vivante et les habitants semblent vaquer à toutes leurs occupations comme si le pays n’était pas déchiré par cette guerre civile qui se poursuit. Cet après-midi, je fais un autre déplacement, en compagnie de ma parente. Mais laissons la parole à “tante Marie-Louise de Beyrouth”. Elle écrit à ma famille le 27 juin: « … Dimanche après-midi [25 juin], je suis allée avec lui [Hubert] et la supérieure à Beit-Méry, le lieu où nous estivons. Il y a tout près une vieille citadelle, une église construite sur un ancien [sanctuaire] byzantin, lui-même construit sur des ruines phéniciennes. Il y a 2 colonnes de 2 m de diamètre à l’entrée de la chapelle. Il m’a photographiée près de l’une de ces colonnes. Il y a aussi d’autres ruines dont vous verrez des colonnes car il a pris pas mal de photos ».

This morning, I visited Beirut town centre, or what remains of it, and it left me a strange feeling, for the city, although much damaged by the bombardments, is very lively and the inhabitants seem to attend to their affairs as if the country was not torn apart by this civil war the end of which one can’t see yet. This afternoon, I do another outing, with my relative. But I let “aunt Marie-Louise of Beyrouth” speak. She writes to my family on the 27th of June: ‘… On Sunday afternoon [25 June], I went with him [Hubert] and the superior to Beit Mery, the place where we spend summers. Very near, there is an old citadel, a church built on a former Byzantine sanctuary, which itself is built on Phoenician ruins. There are 2 columns with a diameter of 2 metres at the entrance of the chapel. He photographed me near one of those pillars. There are also other ruins of which you’ll see some columns, for he took quite a lot of photos’.

Beit Mery se trouve à une vingtaine de kilomètres à l’est de la capitale, dans un cadre de collines constituant les contreforts de la chaîne montagneuse occidentale du Liban. Grâce à son altitude d’environ 800 mètres, l’air y est beaucoup moins lourd qu’à Beyrouth, et la localité est depuis toujours un lieu de séjour apprécié en été. Des vues se développent vers la métropole et vers les belles étendues forestières peuplées de pins, alors que les fameux cèdres du Liban sont devenus très rares dans ce massif. Sur une hauteur se regroupent d’intéressants monuments remontant à presque toutes les époques historiques, depuis des vestiges phéniciens jusqu’au monastère de saint Jean Baptiste, du XVIIIe siècle, en passant par les témoignages des Romains et du Moyen-Age. Beit Mery is situated hardly 20 km east from the capital city, in a setting of heights constituting the foothills of Mount Lebanon, the country’s western mountain range. Thanks to its altitude of about 800 metres, the air is much less sultry than in Beirut, and the locality has always been an appreciated summer resort. Views stretch to the metropolis and to the beautiful pine forests, while the famous Lebanese cedars have become very rare in this massif. On a hill gather interesting monuments dating back to nearly all historic ages, from Phoenician remains to Saint John the Baptist monastery (XVIIIth century), through the Roman and Middle-Ages pieces of evidence. I let you do the visit by yourselves and I’m meeting you at the bottom of the page again.

Grâce aux Pères dominicains du Caire, j’ai pu découvrir les hauts lieux de la métropole égyptienne dans les meilleures conditions. Le 24 juin, j’atterris à Beyrouth où je n’ai aucun mal à parvenir à mon lieu d’hébergement car ma grand-tante – qui fait aussi partie de l’ordre des Prêcheurs, autre désignation des Dominicains – est venue me chercher à l’aéroport. J’ai tout de suite reconnu “tante Marie-Louise”, grâce à son habit religieux. Le couvent se trouve rue de Verdun, quartier Fayoumé, en face de l’ambassade du Brésil. Nous nous y rendons en taxi. Je constate tout de suite qu’une grande partie du centre ville a été quasiment détruite par la guerre civile en cours, qui se rallume après chaque violation de trêve. Tout est très calme aujourd’hui. Je remarque vite que les feux rouges ne sont nullement respectés et que c’est le conducteur le plus pressé qui passe d’abord.

Comme au Caire, l’ambiance qui prévaut ici au couvent, chez les Soeurs mises en ma présence, est simple et amicale. Les conversations et les repas sont informels et détendus. Je ne ressens pas chez les Soeurs une atmosphère de réclusion et de sévérité mais au contraire d’échange et d’ouverture. J’arrive à peu près les mains vides car je n’ai pu apporter ni les diapositives sur l’Ethiopie ni le café que l’on m’avait demandés. Je m’efforce au moins de répondre de mon mieux aux nombreuses questions que l’on me pose sur mon grand voyage, qui touche à sa fin.

Thanks to the Dominican Fathers in Cairo, I saw the main historic places of the Egyptian metropolis in the best conditions. On the 24th of June, I land in Beyrouth where I have no difficulty to get to the place where I’m going to stay, for my great-aunt, who also belongs to the Order of Preachers, other designation for the Dominicans, has come to the airport to meet me. I recognized “aunt Marie-Louise” immediately, thanks to her clerical dress. The convent is located in Verdun street, Fayoumé quarter, in front of the embassy of Brazil. We get there by taxi. I notice at once that a large part of the city centre has been badly damaged by the current civil war, which flares up again after each breach of truce. Everything is very quiet to-day. I quickly note that the traffic lights are not at all respected and that the driver in the greatest hurry goes first.

Like in Cairo, the atmosphere that reigns among the Sisters placed in my presence is simple and friendly. The conversations and the meals are informal and relaxed. I don’t notice an atmosphere of reclusion and severity among the Sisters, but on the contrary, of exchanges and open-mindedness. I arrive here with my hands nearly empty for I couldn’t bring the slides about Ethiopia and any coffee either, which I had been asked for. I try at least, the best that I can, to answer the many questions I’m asked about my “great trip”, which is coming to its end.

Le lendemain 25 juin, je visite la capitale du Liban, dans la matinée. Presque tout le monde parle le français, en plus de l’arabe. Je rencontre un bon accueil partout. On voit ici la place de l’Etoile, excavée pour y réaliser des fouilles archéologiques, ce qui n’empêche pas un marché de s’y tenir. On distingue la tour du Sérail, abîmée par la guerre.

On the following day, the 25th of June, in the morning, I visit the capital of Lebanon. Nearly everybody can speak French here, beside Arabic. Everyone is welcoming. Above, you can see the place de l’Etoile (Square of the Star), excavated for archaeological purposes, which doesn’t prevent a market to put up its stalls there. One can sight the Sérail (seraglio) tower, spoiled by the war.

Les six photos ci-dessus montrent l’état de désolation que présente le centre de Beyrouth suite aux bombardements de la guerre, qui continue. Bien que tout proche, le quartier du couvent des Dominicaines est moins souvent la cible des tirs, et se trouve relativement épargné.

These six photos (above) show the state of desolation that Beirut centre presents, following the bombardments of the war, which is still going on. Albeit very close, the Dominican Sisters’ convent quarter is not so often the target of fire, and is relatively spared.

Après ces tristes images, voici un aperçu un peu plus optimiste. J’aime bien le drapeau libanais déployé ici en signe d’espoir, malgré toutes ces destructions.

After those sad pictures, here is a little more optimistic view. I like the Lebanese flag, unfurled here as a sign of hope, despite all the destruction.

Je remarque vite que tout le monde semble vivre d’une façon quasi normale. Tous les commerces et activités fonctionnent, ainsi que les loisirs. Ces pêcheurs à la ligne parviennent à trouver un indispensable moment de détente et les immeubles défigurés n’y changent rien. Il semble régner une certaine ambiance de liberté malgré la guerre. Par exemple, je vais où bon me semble en ville – ou presque; je peux photographier ce que je veux sans entraves et sans “regards noirs”, et je ne subis pas de fouilles. Les gens sont aimables et semblent être doués de la faculté de supporter les épreuves avec un certain “naturel”, fatalisme que l’on prête volontiers aux Orientaux. Mais mon regard de visiteur étranger ne me permet évidemment pas d’appréhender toute la complexité de la situation dramatique que traverse le pays.                              EPISODE 33 

I quickly notice that everybody seems to live in a nearly normal way. The city is busy, the shops are open, and leisure activities are going on. These anglers manage to find a necessary moment of relaxation and the defaced buildings can’t change anything to it. A certain atmosphere of freedom seems to prevail in spite of the war. For example, I can go nearly wherever I like in town, I can photograph whatever I want without hindrance and without “black looks” in the eyes, and I’m not searched here. People are kind and seem to be able to put up with hardships with some “naturalness”, a fatalism often supposed to be characteristic of the Orientals. But of course my foreign visitor’s look doesn’t enable me to understand all the complexity of the tragic situation the country is going through.                                  PART 33

Après avoir passé deux jours à visiter le Caire, je ne peux quitter la capitale de l’Egypte sans découvrir le plateau de Gizeh et ses Pyramides. En ce 23 juin, accompagné d’un jeune Père du couvent dominicain, qui ne porte pas l’habit mais est vêtu en civil, je prends un autocar vers le célèbre site, situé à 25 km environ au sud-ouest de la métropole. Nous allons effectuer cette excursion le matin, à cause de la chaleur.

After a two-day visit of Cairo, I can’t leave Egypt’s capital city without seeing Giza plateau and its Pyramids. On this 23rd of June, accompanied by a young Father from the Dominican convent, who is not wearing clerical dress but plain clothes, I take a bus to the famous place, situated about 25 km south-west from the metropolis. We are doing this excursion in the morning because of the heat.

Je m’éloigne un peu du site en marchant vers le sud pour avoir cette vue générale sur les principales pyramides, qui semblent toutes trois sensiblement de la même taille, vues d’ici. En fait, Mykérinos, à gauche, a un volume dix fois plus petit que celui de la Grande Pyramide de Khéops, à droite. I walk away southwards to enjoy this general view of the three main pyramids, which seem to be nearly the same size, seen from here. The volume of Menkaure’s pyramid – on the left – is in fact ten times smaller than Khufu’s Great Pyramid’s – on the right. The pyramid of Khafre, in the centre, looks the tallest one but is actually slightly surpassed by Khufu’s.

Un homme rencontré au même endroit veut “m’immortaliser” avec mon propre appareil. C’est vrai que le cadre s’y prête. La marche dans le sable mou est très pénible, surtout sous ce soleil de midi, devenu tout à fait écrasant. C’est le moment de rentrer, de prendre un peu de repos, puis d’accomplir les démarches habituelles de fin de séjour. A man I meet at the same spot wants to “‘immortalize” me with my own camera. The background is indeed very suitable. Walking in this soft sand is very tiresome, especially in the really crushing midday sun. It’s time to come back, to have a little rest and to do the usual steps at the end of a stay. On the 24th of June, in the afternooon, I take off for Beirut, after giving the Fathers lots of thanks for their fantastic reception.                      PART 32

Alors que je quitte définitivement l’Ethiopie en cette matinée du 20 juin, je sais que la plus belle et la plus passionnante page de ma vie jusqu’à maintenant vient de se tourner. Ce voyage de retour va constituer une transition vers la reprise de mon existence en Normandie, et représenter une sorte de consolation me permettant de ne pas partir le coeur trop serré. Dans le cadre de mon contrat, j’ai droit à un billet d’avion gratuit pour rentrer en France directement, sans escale. J’ai demandé et obtenu de l’Ambassade à Addis le remboursement de ce titre de transport à prix réduit, et j’ai acheté un autre billet à plein tarif, autorisant des arrêts intermédiaires. J’ai une grand-tante religieuse à Beyrouth, qui m’a invité, et m’a mis en contact avec les Pères dominicains au Caire, qui pourront aussi me recevoir. La capitale de l’Egypte est donc la première étape de ce nouveau périple. Après le passage en douane, je demande un taxi pour le centre ville et le couvent des Pères, abritant l’Institut Dominicain d’Etudes Orientales, qui se situe rue Masna al-Tarabich. Bien que tout le monde semble agréable et serviable, aucun chauffeur de taxi sollicité ne reconnaît le nom de la rue, ni par la prononciation ni par l’écriture. Tout le monde semble également ignorer l’existence des Pères. Je finis tout de même par parvenir au couvent, après une recherche assez longue.

As I’m leaving Ethiopia for good on this 20th of June in the morning, I know that the most beautiful and the most fascinating page of my life so far has just been turned. This trip home is going to constitute a transition toward the resumption of my existence in Normandy, and to represent a sort of consolation enabling me not to leave with a too heavy heart. In my contract framework, I’m entitled to a free air ticket to go back to France directly, without stopping over. I requested and obtained the repayment of this reduced-fare ticket from the Embassy in Addis, and I bought another ticket at full price, allowing middle stops. I’ve a great-aunt who is a nun in Beirut, who invited me and put me in touch with the Dominican Fathers in Cairo, who will also be able to put me up. So the capital of Egypt is the first stage of this new trip. After going through the customs, I ask for a taxi to the city centre and the Fathers’ convent, sheltering the Dominican Institute for Oriental Studies, situated Masna al-Tarabich street. Although everyone looks welcoming and obliging, none of the taxi drivers I ask can recognize the name of the street, neither through pronunciation nor through reading. Everybody seems not to know the Fathers’ existence as well. Finally, I manage to get to the convent, after a pretty long search.

L’après-midi, je fais un tour dans la capitale. Voici la place Al Geish.

In the afternoon, I go for a stroll in the capital city. Here is Al Geish Square.

J’aime beaucoup cette photo, prise aussi place Al Geish. Ces magnifiques sourires et expressions montrent que point n’est besoin d’être né dans la dentelle pour manifester la joie de vivre.

Je suis très bien reçu par les Pères, qui, en ma présence tout du moins, ne semblent pas mener une vie recluse et ascétique. Je partage mes repas avec quelques uns d’entre eux, dans une ambiance simple et amicale. L’un des Pères va se charger de me faire visiter les lieux les plus intéressants du Caire pendant mon court séjour. Après une bonne nuit, je passe donc la journée du 21 juin à découvrir la capitale. Voici la place Tahrir, au coeur de la cité (ci-dessus).

I’m very well entertained by the Fathers, who, at least while I’m here, don’t seem to lead a cloistered and ascetic life. I share my meals with a few of them, in a simple and friendly atmosphere. One of the Fathers is going to show me the most interesting spots in Cairo during my short stay. So after a good night, I spend the following day (21 June) sightseeing the capital. Here is Tahrir Square, in the heart of the city (above).

Le Caire compte bien sûr de très nombreuses mosquées, à la silhouette caractéristique. Je vous laisse apprécier ces vues.

Cairo owns lots of mosques, of course, with a characteristic figure. I let you appreciate these views.

On peut parfois monter dans les parties hautes des monuments pour découvrir un intéressant panorama sur la capitale. Le Caire recèle des trésors, mais ne donne pas l’impression d’une ville maintenue en bon état. L’ensemble est très gris et très poussiéreux, heureusement égayé par le soleil quasi permanent.

One sometimes can go up to the high parts of the buildings to sight an interesting panorama onto the capital. Cairo conceals treasures, but doesn’t give the impression of a well-kept town. The whole is very grey and dusty, fortunately brightened up by the nearly permanent sun.

Après une bonne soirée chez les Pères, je parcours à nouveau les rues le lendemain 22 juin. Voici Bab-al-Futuh et la mosquée Al-Hakim.

After a good evening with the Fathers, I go all over the streets again, on the next day, the 22nd of June. Here is Bab-al-Futuh and Al-Hakim mosque.

Les deux photos ci-dessus montrent “l’ancienne forteresse”. Pendant ce bref séjour, je m’occupe aussi de l’indispensable visa pour me rendre au Liban. Je l’obtiens, non sans quelques difficultés.

These two photos (above) show the “old fortress”. During this short stay, I deal with the visa I have to obtain to go to Lebanon. I get it, not without any difficulties.

Il aurait été dommage de ne pas visiter le musée égyptien du Caire, qui se situe à deux pas de la place Tahrir. Je le découvre donc et admire l’extraordinaire trésor de Toutânkhamon. Voici maintenant une rue typique, dominée par une mosquée, jamais bien loin ici. J’écris le 22 juin: « C’est avec un petit pincement au coeur que j’ai quitté définitivement l’Ethiopie avant-hier, très tempéré par le fait que je suis en vacances et que je fais un beau voyage. Je suis bien arrivé au Caire où j’ai été chaleureusement accueilli par les Pères dominicains à qui tante Marie-Louise de Beyrouth m’avait recommandé. Ils promènent même le touriste que je suis. Le Caire est immense, étouffant (plus de 40°). Les gens sont extraordinairement sympathiques. Demain, je vais voir les Pyramides, et je pars pour Beyrouth comme prévu le 24 par Middle East Airlines. (…) Le Caire est très intéressant malgré le vent [brûlant] comme une flamme de chalumeau ». Comme d’habitude, je fais ce voyage avec peu de bagages. Jean-Luc, mon ancien camarade de Harrar, que je veux remercier ici, a bien voulu prendre le paquet de mes trente cassettes de musique, dûment scellé et tamponné par la Censure à Addis, dans sa propre malle expédiée en France peu après mon départ d’Ethiopie. Il me l’enverra ensuite par la poste.              EPISODE 31 

It would have been a pity not to see the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities in Cairo, situated very close to Tahrir Square. I visit it, then, and I admire the extraordinary Tutankhamun’s treasure. Here is now a typical street, overlooked by a mosque, never a long way here. I write on the 22th of June: ‘I left Ethiopia for ever the day before yesterday with a small lump in my throat, but soothed by the fact I’m on holidays and I’m on a lovely trip. I arrived in Cairo without a hitch and I’ve been welcomed by the Dominican Fathers to whom aunt Marie-Louise of Beirut had recommended me. They even take round the tourist that I am. Cairo is immense, stifling (over 40°C). People are incredibly friendly. To-morrow, I’m going to see the Pyramids, and I’m leaving to Beirut on the 24th with Middle East Airlines as planned. (…) Cairo is very interesting in spite of the wind, [burning] like a blowlamp’s flame’. As usual, I’m doing this trip with little luggage. Jean-luc, my companion in Harar, whom I want to thank here, agreed to take the parcel of my thirty cassettes of music, duly sealed and stamped at the Censors’ office in Addis, in his own trunk he dispatched to France a little after I left Ethiopia. He will send it to me through the post later.                 PART 31
